The Angelcare Movement and Sound Monitor is a baby movement and audio monitor in the $70 – $80 price range.

It consists of a movement sensor pad which goes under your baby's mattress and senses your baby's movements as well as an audio baby alarm. The movement sensor will sound an alarm if no movement is detected after 20 seconds and you will also be able to hear your baby at the same time.

The Angelcare Movement and Sound has a monitor with a soothing night light. The cord from the sensor pad is inserted into the back of the monitor or nursery unit. You can insert 4 AAA batteries into the monitor to ensure that it keeps working during any power outage. If you have misplaced your parent unit you can locate it by pressing the paging button at the top of the monitor.

The Angelcare AC401 parent unit has small LCD screen with lights that indicate sound levels on the left hand side. It also displays the temperature indicator, the movement and sound monitoring setting (see below), the temperature control setting where you can set a high and low setting for the preferred temperature range of the nursery, the sound transmission setting, the out of range setting, the alarm setting, the nursery unit icon which will flash if the units are not connected, the parent unit icon and the battery icon.

There are several monitoring options you can use:
Tic function: this is a constant "tic" noise that tells you that the sensor pad is detecting movements – and also confirms that the unit is functioning correctly
Sound function: like any other audio baby monitor picks up any sound being made in the nursery and transmits it to the parent unit
Movement function: detects your baby's movements via the Sensorpad. If no movement is detected for 15 seconds a :rouse: alarm will sound – this in itself can be enough to stir your baby. If no movement is detected for another 5 seconds the main alarm will sound – loud rapid beeps.
You can combine these monitoring options in five ways:
tic, sound and movement: can be reassuring especially for new parents or those with an "at risk" baby
sound and movement: gives you the best of both worlds – monitoring your baby's movements as well as the noise level
tic and movement: gives you the reassurance that your baby is constantly moving and will set off an alarm if those movements stop
movement only: movement monitoring without the constant "tic" which some people may find a distraction
sound only: this is a useful option if you want to use your monitor in a playroom so you do not require the movement monitoring

Sensor Pad

The sensor pad will work with most baby bed sizes and mattresses but should NOT be used with memory foam mattress, dual sided mattresses, a mattress with a hollow frame or a Purflo mattress. .
If your cot has a solid hardwood base it may be necessary to drill a hole in the base to pass the cord through. If you have a spring base crib or a slat base crib you may need to a hard board between the crib base and the Sensor Pad movement detector. The board should measure at least 13 x 13 x ¼ inches thick. You can purchase a pre-fabricated hard board if necessary.

The sensitivity level is preset at 3 which is suitable for most bed sizes and types of mattresses – you may need to reset the sensitivity level as your baby starts to move around his/her crib.
It is important not to have anything that might produce vibrations on or near the cot such as a mobile or a fan as this could cause the unit to register these movements as your baby moving.

Battery

The Angelcare uses 4 AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries – included in your purchase – it will take an initial charge of 15 hours to fully charge the batteries. There is no official figure for the battery life – but no complaints either so it would seem the battery life is acceptable.
The parent unit will let you know when you need to recharge with the low-battery alert.

This baby monitor operates on the 927 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands. It has 8 manually selectable channels so that if you detect any interference you can select a different channel to avoid the problem.

Nearly three quarters of the reviewers of this audio and movement monitor rated it five stars! Many customers believe this monitor has been responsible for saving their baby's life – with them finding their baby blue and lifeless when the alarm has sounded. This monitor can be particularly useful if you have a baby who has been born prematurely or has a respiratory issue, laryngomalacia, central sleep apnea or acid reflux. There are occasional false alarms, but all parents reported that they would rather have a false alarm than risk missing a real situation.

A few parents have trouble getting the sensitivity just right for the movement sensor pad. There are comprehensive instructions in the manual on how to get this just right.

Pros:

The Angelcare Sound and Movement monitor monitors the movement of your baby using an under mattress sensor pad. If no movement is detected for 15 seconds a "rouse" alarm will sound, if no movement is detected for a further 5 seconds the main alarm will sound. The monitor has a "tic" option and with the sound and movement monitoring there are five different options that can be used.

Cons:

With its monitoring of movement and sound the only thing missing from this monitor is perhaps video monitoring – and Angelcare have thought about this too – creating the Angelcare Video, Sound and Movement monitor.
